Change is something a lot of people tend to resist

Change is something a lot of people tend to resist. It is something we have all experienced but even more so over the last year. Home schooling, closing businesses, working from home, adapting our services, not socialising with friends and family – all change we have had forced onto our lives rather than chosen. Change is good for growth - but transitioning is always difficult.

Here are my top tips on adapting to change. Any more to add?

1: Establish structure and routine.

2: Focus on what you can control.

3: Communicate - with your clients and your team.

4: Be kind - you never know what someone else is going through, show compassion and empathy.

5: Embrace change – grow through it. The comfort zone is nice and cosy, but nothing ever grows there.

6: Use change as a learning experience - anytime I am faced with a challenge I ask myself, what can I learn from this?

7: Set achievable goals - don't set yourself up for failure. I create little goals out the big ones!

8: Have a strong network of like-minded people around you.

9: Slow down and be patient - with yourself and with others.

10: Let go of the old - we can't move forward if we keep looking back. Have no regrets, whatever decisions were made in the past, we believed were right in that moment in time.

Today marks a year in lockdown.

None of us could have ever imagined we would still have restrictions in our lives 12 months later, when our Prime Minister ordered us to stay at home on 23rd March 2020.

We could talk about all the things we experienced, the changes we made in our business, how we adapted and new hobbies we took up.

However, we want to dedicate today to every single person who has lost a loved over the last year. We also are thinking of those in care homes who have been completely isolated from their family members. Those who have struggled with their mental wellbeing and those still suffering with long Covid. We also dedicate today to our wonderful NHS and other key workers who have worked tirelessly over the last year.

To everyone who has done their bit to keep their family and community safe - be proud. As restrictions start to ease, remember it is not the time to get complacent, we should all still make sensible decisions about the risks we take in order to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.

Whatever you do today - try and take that moment to reflect - not only on the last year - but all the things you are grateful for. The list is probably a lot longer than you would think.

"In the rush to return to normal, use this time to consider which parts of normal are worth rushing back to"

Lots of posts about life returning to normal on 21st June. It's really got me thinking about my old normal - what that was and if it's actually what I want my normal to look like going forward.

My old normal:

Worried a lot, always had a plan B, created every scenario in my head in order to be prepared for every outcome, introverted, people pleaser (huge one), perfectionist.

I've learnt some valuable lessons over the last 12 months and I hope that my normal going forward takes new habits on board.

Ive learnt:

• To slow down (big one) - things don't always have to be done and reacted to instantly

• To focus on what I can control

• Don't just talk about that overdue dinner with a friend - book it!

• Saying yes to things that I want to do and not to just please others

• To put things in perspective - is it worth losing sleep over?

• Asking for help, is not weakness

• People are empathetic when you're open & honest

• Being kinder to myself

• That bad times don't last forever

• I'm stronger & more resilient than I've ever given myself credit for

• Progress over perfection
